X-Linked PRA2 (Miniature Schnauzer Type)

Description

X-linked Progressive Retinal Atrophy (XLPRA) is a hereditary eye disease that affects multiple dog breeds, including the Miniature Schnauzer. It leads to the degeneration of the retina, eventually causing blindness.

The causative mutation for XLPRA in Miniature Schnauzers is not the same as in other breeds. The mutation is found on the X chromosome, which means it's X-linked. Female dogs with one copy of the mutation are carriers and typically don't show symptoms, whereas male dogs with the mutation are affected and will typically develop the disease.
